Shop My Outfit and Makeup:
OMG FINALLY! Wow, okay. Where to start?! So, basically, as I’m sure some of you may have noticed (if you’ve been following me for a while), I haven’t published a blog post in a long time. Since Valentine’s Day to be exact. That’s about 4 months. It may not seem like a long time, but for someone like me who was super pumped to start blogging and super serious about turning it into my side hustle, I consider that a long time.
I took a break from blogging with pretty much no explanation on my blog or on social media, which probably wasn’t the best move. But, I promise I had good reasoning! And I’m so excited to be back doing what I love, which is creating content for you all on a consistent basis! 🙂 I wanted to take this opportunity to share..
(1) Why I took a break from blogging
(2) Explain the changes that I made to my website
(3) A big life update
So, here it goes!
Why I Took a Break From Blogging
Taking a break from blogging wasn’t something I really planned on doing. It wasn’t like I said to myself “okay, this Valentine’s Day blog post is going to be my last one for a while and I’ll come back in approximately 3 months.” I wish I could say my life was that organized, LOL. I was doing a lot during that time while I wasn’t blogging; and while I hate that I took such a long break, I’m also glad I did it because now I’m well educated and in the perfect spot to start chasing my dream and doing this thing for real. If I were to give a list of reasons why I took a break from blogging, they would probably include the following.
I wanted to re-design my website. While some people may not see this as a good reason to take a break from blogging, it was a big deal to me. I’m a visual person and after a few months of blogging my mediocre looking website just wasn’t doing it for me anymore. I wanted a blog that I was truly proud of. Something that wasn’t so basic and that really stood out. Something that was easy for my followers to navigate. Something that people looked at and said: “wow, this must have taken some work.” This is how I finally feel about my site now that I’ve taken the time to re-design it.
Sure, there will always be optimizations and little edits to be made along the way. But for now, I’m extremely happy with the layout of my blog (much happier than I was with my old one). There were just so many problems with my old one that made my blog look so unprofessional, and I didn’t like it!
I didn’t only re-design my website, I’ve been really taking my overall brand more seriously. I came up with a color palette, I’ve been brainstorming ideas for content, and I’ve been learning more about blogging tools. Basically, I just feel way more geared up to finally do this thing, and I couldn’t be more excited!
I felt lost and overwhelmed. Let’s be honest, I think all bloggers have experienced this. You don’t really know what you’re getting yourself into when you first start blogging. It’s so much fun and it’s so rewarding, but it’s also a SH*T TON of work. I was trying to learn a lot while also trying to consistently post content at least 2-3 times per week. To those bloggers who post every day of the week, props to you. I don’t know how you do it.
One thing I struggled with that I did not anticipate being so hard was planning outfits in advance and the content to go along with that outfit. I did not realize how hard this would be. But lemme tell ya, it is. I’m new to the blogging space, so I can’t afford to pay a professional every time I want to do a blog post. Moving forward, I’ve planned my content ahead of time and I’m having family and friends take pictures for me. Hopefully, things get easier!
Not only was I feeling overwhelmed, but I occasionally felt discouraged as well. Not to get to deep, but it’s hard for me to see successful bloggers on Instagram. Of course, I’m always going to root for their success because I love following them and their content inspires me. But at the same time, it makes me wonder to myself “will I ever be as good as her?” It’s a silly thing to think, I get it. I should just focus on me and work hard at improving my blog. And that’s what I’m going to try my best to do moving forward. But, I am human and I do get down on myself sometimes and get discouraged.
Even though I felt so lost for a while, I’ve taken this time off to really learn more about fashion blogging.
I started a new job.
New Site Design
Now I’ll be talking a little bit more about my site re-design and how to navigate my new site. If you’ve been following me for a while, you might notice that my blog looks a little different than it used to.
New Logo. I have a creative side, so it’s no surprise that when I started blogging I geeked out over having the perfect logo. My old logo looked like this. Not bad, but I wanted something a little different and I’m so happy with my logo now! I’m going to be using it in all of my branding materials as well. I’m so thankful to have worked with a flexible graphic designer who created something so beautiful for me (shout out to Terisia Hicks, you da bomb girl! Let me know if you’d like her info, she’s awesome).
Overall, my homepage design is much prettier and more dynamic. My old homepage design was very basic. It looked like what someone who was very new to WordPress (which I was) would come up with. However, since starting my new job, I’ve learned a lot about WordPress and I’ve gotten better at using it. For those of you that don’t know, I’m a Content Writer at a digital marketing agency. Most of our clients have websites on WordPress, so I’ve learned a lot about using it and I’ve even learned some basic HTML and CSS! I totally geek out over that stuff, I actually find it interesting to learn!! As I started to learn more, I realized that my homepage could look so much cooler if I just put in the work. Which is exactly what I did!
“Currently Loving” – This is a shop slider that I added to my homepage. You can see it right underneath my logo and the giant picture of me blowing glitter 🙂 These are basically products that I’ve either recently purchased or that I plan to purchase soon (AKA, on my wish list).
You can also see my 3 most recent blog posts at the bottom of my homepage.
I added a shop tab! I’m super excited about this. Under my shop tab, you can choose either Beauty or Fashion. Under “Fashion” I have the same shop slider that I’m using for my homepage (I still have to add some to this). But, my beauty page has a lot more; including my nighttime skincare routine, every day makeup, and random beauty favs. Check it out here. As far as shopping for my outfits, I’ll also be adding these sliders to every blog post so you can shop the outfit from that post!
Big Life Update
Now, finally… my big life update! I’m so excited to announce that I’ll be moving to St. Louis in a couple of weeks for a new job. I got a job as a copywriter at a big marketing company which I’m SO excited about. I truly feel like writing and content creation is what I’m meant to do and I’m so glad that even though I studied marketing, God is leading me down this path and towards the dream life that I want. He truly does have a plan, and I’m starting to see so clearly why everything in my life happened the way it did over the last couple of years.
I truly love Columbia and couldn’t have asked for a better 4 years in college here. Heck, even when I decided to stay here after graduating it wasn’t that bad. I was honestly so happy. But, for a lot of personal reasons, moving back to St. Louis is what’s best for me right now! I’m so excited for this new journey and to share it with all of you.
